Hatchlings

DSCN7722_2

Day 1.

On the 4th of December 2011, a clump of straws appeared in a plant next to my window. From past experience, I knew that this was in fact a nest being built.
The last time this happened on my Christmas tree, the birds laid their eggs but then abandoned the nest. This time, I was determined to not let this happen & so all the neighbour’s cats were chased off & no tampering was done with the nest!

Found this tiny beetle yesterday in a bucket of water. It caught my eye because it had something like a transparent shell on top of that gold coloured body.

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire

DSCN3736_stitch_2

At 828m, the highest point in Mauritius - the Black River Peak, most commonly known as Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. This photo was taken last year when I had gone for a hike with fellow bloggers down the Black River Gorges. At that time, I had decided that one day I would definitely climb that mountain.

Well, that day has finally arrived. After having earlier savoured the views from Cascade 500 pieds, we were now on our way to conquer the highest peak in Mauritius.

Cascade 500 pieds

IMG_1705 (Custom)

On the 1st of November, taking advantage of the dual public holidays, we planned a trip to the Black River Gorges National Park. Our destination was Cascade 500 Pieds also known as Cascade de Galets or Cascade de L’Exemple, a waterfall that is obviously 500 ft high (152 m).

Kittens

DSCN7422_2

Today, I noticed that my neighbour’s cat was going upstairs several times. While they are free to roam the yards & the walls, going inside the house is unusual for them. Going upstairs, I heard what sounded like faint meows. Rummaging & banging around some boxes, I couldn’t hear it again. & then I tried to imitate a cat’s meow. From a box, I heard some faint replies & after removing all of its contents, I found a kitten hidden deep inside the box…

DSCN5806

Yes, this year I went for a stroll in my village. :)

Lion Mountain - Part 2

DSCN4881

In the last post, we had been abandoned & left to explore the village of Treize Cantons in Vieux Grand Port. So far, we've had a history lesson, crossed a dual bridge, frightened a spider & saw some floating lands. Now, it was time to climb the mountain – Montagne Lion, 480m.

Lion Mountain - Part 1

DSCN4411_2

Last Sunday (the 25th September), after watching some planes take off, I was on my way to the actual adventure of the day - climbing Montagne Lion. After conquering the 812m of Le Pouce twice, I couldn't wait to climb Lion Mountain & it’s paltry 480m!

I mean, how hard can it be?

Eid Mubarak!

The Mauritian Briyani (Biryani), one of the most favourite dishes of Mauritian cuisine, like the Dholl Puri. Usually cooked in a Deg, it can also be prepared using a rice cooker, as the above the vegetable pulao. Served with salad, satini or pickles. Washed down with Pepsi/Coke or the traditional chilled Alouda. Typical Mauritian.

Another trek to Le Pouce Mountain, this time with some fellow tweeps. That was on last Sunday, the 31st July.
It was only 3 weeks before that I had climbed Le Pouce, hence the experience was still fresh in my mind. But this time I was better prepared, so climbing it should be a cinch. I mean, how hard can it be?

Le Pouce Mountain. At 811m (or 812m), it is the 3rd highest peak in Mauritius. & from what I've heard, one of the easiest to climb. Look at it, it’s just an over-sized hill…

I mean, how hard can it be?

A better title would have been traffic jams in Mauritius….

Contrary to the previous video (Triolet to Port Louis), using the new Triolet bypass road and the motorway from Calebasses.

A 1 hour journey recorded on the N900 and edited on Windows Live Movie Maker. 6 hours to upload.

Triolet to Port Louis

From Triolet to Port Louis at 200km/h! Actually, a 45 min journey, speeded up by 8x (& 16x at the traffic jams).

Recorded on the N900. Edited using Windows Live Movie Maker. Inspired by Yashvin’s video – In the car – Asté dipain. :)

My initial idea was to do time-lapse photography. However, the app was buggy – kept the same exposure throughout & gives blank photos after 300 shots. So I decided to just record a video… Notice the N900 falling down at a certain speed-breaker! :p
